Linux Administrator Job Description

Job Overview

The Linux Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of all Linux systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To perform daily administration activities for all company Linux servers
  • Installation of all new servers
  • To perform system backups
  • Monitor patch releases and develop patch installation strategies
  • Test, debug and document software developed both internally and externally
  • Monitor and maintain network server and database performance levels
  • To help develop strategies to improve availability and utilisation f Linux environments
  • Maintain and continually update network system security to provide for latest protection against viruses and other types of network vulnerabilities
  • To provide out of hours on-call support where necessary

Skills / Attributes Required

  • Previous support experience within a Linux / UNIX environment
  • Experience of installing and configuring new hardware and software
  • Basic knowledge of networking, firewalls, routers and switches
  • Knowledge of Perl or similar scripting language
  • Database Administration experience (SQL / MySQL)
  • Previous experience running Apache / Tomcat
  • Ability to work within a fast paced environment, whilst maintaining a good quality of work
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Any experience with SAN / NAS technology would be desirable, but is not essential
